Time is marching on**

23 05 2008

I woke up to the sound of pouring rain. It was pouring when I headed out to work this morning. The rain continued through much of the day, waning to a sprinkle just after lunch. Of course we were on Rainy day lunch schedule, but at least there was no testing, so we were back to full periods, and even though we lost power during my prep, the kids were pretty good about getting some work done.

Scene: My classroom, after lunch.

The students are working on their A-Z’s of Algebra projects. They are to create a book of the terms, concepts, and skills they’ve learned this year, each page starting with a new letter.

Wordy Squirrel, tilting his head: Mrs. D? What’s deductive reasoning?
Me, smiling: What does your glossary say?

Wordy Squirrel sighs and looks it up.

Smarty Squirrel approaches my desk, asking to borrow some tape.

Me, surprised: Smarty! You’re getting so tall!
Smarty Squirrel, eyes darting: Uhm… okay. Thanks?
Me, smiling: I guess I forget how much you guys grow over the course of a year.
Brainy Squirrel, chiming in: Are you sure you’re not getting shorter?
Me, rolling my eyes: Not hardly.
Smarty Squirrel, grinning widely: Is it true that old people shrink? How does that work?
Me, sighing and waving Smarty Squirrel away: Focus on your project.
Ditzy Squirrel, excitedly: Maybe it is true. I mean, old people are really short!
Wordy Squirrel, eyes wide in mock seriousness: Dude! You just called Mrs. D old!
Ditzy Squirrel, brow furrowed: No I didn’t!
Wordy Squirrel, nodding and gesturing: Yes you did! You said all old people are short. Mrs. D is short, therefore Mrs. D must be an old person.
Ditzy Squirrel, eyes bugging out: Oh my God! You’re totally right!
Me, laughing wildly: Looks like you’ve figured out what deductive reasoning is.

Squirrels.

Gotta love ‘em!

I love that your pictures consist of your classroom, your classroom, your classroom, beer. That does sum up a teacher’s day pretty well. I got puked on by a kindergartener yesterday…nothing makes you want a weekend more than being covered in someone else’s vomit.

Aw! Thank you so much!!! It’s so nice to get a little bloglove! :) I love reading your site, too. Your enthusiasm for your kids and obvious love of what you do is so … arg, I wanna say inspiring, but that sounds so cliche. It IS, though! Thank you!!!
